Bill Black is a retired financial advisor, lifelong musician, stage 4 prostate cancer survivor, and the unofficial mayor of his local trout ponds. After 45 years in Southern California, he moved to Colorado, reinvented his life in retirement, and discovered that altitude and attitude are directly correlated.
He has played over 500 gigs, caught nearly 200 trout without ever being skunked, driven a Travato van through more states than he can count, and interviewed over 1,000 experts as host of the nationally recognized Exit Coach Radio Show.
At age 53, Bill had his prostate removed through robotic surgery. At 63, cancer returned and metastasized, requiring 30 radiation treatments, 20 hyperbaric oxygen sessions, and a crash course in something no retiree wants: radiation cystitis. In 2025, he began androgen deprivation therapy (“testosterone-killing drugs”) and an androgen-receptor inhibitor—going from “I take vitamins” to 10 pills every morning, with a prescription cost that would have exceeded $70,000 a year without Medicare Part D.
His experiences give him a unique mix of humor, hard truth, financial savvy, and survivor wisdom.
He writes about retirement, cancer survivorship, reinvention, Colorado life, marriage, dogs, fishing, and the strange things humans do to stay sane.
